You follow the target and you come to this huge tower. Climb up to some sort of a balcony and it has a wooden pole with a lantern suspended beneath it. I cannot in any way get on to the wooden pole, Altair just won't jump from the top of the window on top of the pole.

This chest is on, or in, a square tower SW of the domed structure - Santa Maria Della Fiore? The map shows the chest as appx. 30 meters off the ground - but there's no way to climb the tower. There is a door on one face of the tower I'm still at the beginning of the game (memory sequence 2), but I played the first two and considered myself fairly adept at the platforming and climbing. Nonetheless, this is the second Borgia tower that I simply seem unable to climb.
